Dr. Andrew Kokkino

Dr. Kokkino has been a leader in bringing the latest advances in spine surgery to his patients and community. He is now enthusiastic to bring these skills to a global audience.
Dr. Kokkino was born in Athens, Greece and raised in Chicago. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After working as a toxicologist in the pharmaceutical industry, he attended Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois where he developed his interest in brain and spinal disorders. He then accepted a post-graduate position at the renowned Mayfield Clinic at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Kokkino completed a 7 year training program including a surgical internship, basic science fellowship, a clinical fellowship, and all the elements of his neurosurgical residency. His exposure to the finest intracranial and spinal surgeons fostered an interest in developing more innovative and less invasive methods in treating neurologic and spinal disorders. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
After his training, Dr Kokkino served as an Assistant Professor at Loyola University Medical School and went on to develop an active and successful clinical practice in Eugene-Springfield, Oregon. The last decade has seen remarkable improvements in the treatment of spinal disorders and Dr. Kokkino has been at the leading edge of defining the efficacy of these techniques. He was among the first to incorporate percutaneous vertebral body augmentation techniques on the west coast. He has evolved his spinal decompression and fusion techniques to be performed through the smallest possible incisions which minimize soft tissue and skeletal trauma.
The foundation of his clinical care model comes from engaging patients along their spinal care continuum. This requires identifying conservative measures which may lead to recovery from pain without surgery. For those requiring surgery, patient education and defining expectations is key to success.
Dr. Kokkino has been involved in developing the Neuroscience Institute at Peacehealth Oregon Region and has served as the chairman of the Institute, section of neurosurgery, Day Surgery at Riverbend, and the Gamma Knife Center at Peacehealth. He also serves on the boards of Peacehealth Oregon Region and the Peacehealth Foundation. He is the managing partner of Oregon Neurosurgery Specialists.
